Zambia will host the 2013 International Design Development Summit (IDDS) in Lusaka. With the common vision of finding solutions that give hope to some of the world’s poor communities, IDDS’s most vibrant and remarkable organizers will again team up in Zambia for an exciting and innovative four weeks in July 2013

IDDS 2013 recognizes that there are people with ideas for solutions to problems that affect the communities they live in. Due to limited support and sometimes lacking self-confidence to push these ideas forward the world has missed some key solutions to pressing challenges. IDDS 2013 will focus on working with these people, to produce technologies that not only will improve lives but will also offer opportunities for social entrepreneurship.

Under the theme Better Living through Collaborative Innovations, the summit will identify prospective founders of solutions as a start point for the projects. These founders will then work on design teams of people from diverse backgrounds to develop and improve the design of their technologies. This summit will also make use of the abundant resources found in the rural and peri-urban areas of Zambia.

This summit is part of the vision for improving design approaches, particularly in southern Africa where Zambia is part of the Southern African Innovation Support Network and where country to country collaborations are weak and rarely used as platforms for developing lasting solutions to common social challenges.

Rethink Relief is an intense design workshop dedicated to creating technologies for humanitarian relief that specifically address the gap between short-term relief and long-term sustainable development. This hands-on event is an unique opportunity for practitioners, designers and recipients of humanitarian aid to engage and develop a holistic approach to relief that considers the transition from emergency response to post-disaster self-sufficiency as an integral part of the planning and implementation process.

We bring together people from diverse backgrounds to form multi-disciplinary teams that explore the intersections of disciplines in order to identify unmet opportunities in the humanitarian space, and to discuss, create, invent and develop innovative new technologies and approaches. Teams will be guided through the design process, from the initial problem framing through idea generation, experimentation, sketch modelling, concept selection and prototype fabrication. As we work to develop these solutions, we seek to form a community that will continue to collaborate in the future.

Applications are now closed for Rethink Relief 2013, which will be held from 14 – 20 April at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts (USA).

Rethink Relief is organized by D-Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering in Delft, Netherlands.

The Description:

ECONS is worked in Bairro dos Freitas with PUPA and the local community to raise awareness about local ecological issues and the potential benefits offered by alternative construction methods.

Using these alternative construction methods, instead of concrete blocks could be a cheaper and quicker way for people to build or extend houses. ECONS is developing a low cost brick press with PUPA. This would allow families to produce their own “ecological bricks” by compacting soil, sand and cement and then drying them naturally in the shade. Currently, these bricks are produced and sold on a much larger scale by many companies, but are rarely used by the local community.

PUPA’s local and online presence is also being developed through new signs and new digital content. This could engage more members of the local community with the work of PUPA and encourage more sustainable practices in Bairro dos Freitas.
